The scienti c study of how peoples a ect behaviour, and cognitions are in uenced by the presence, real, or imagines, of at least one other person. Done in a lab under controlled conditions: cover stories, confederates. Independent variable is manipulated by the experimenter. Dependent variable is measured by the experimenter. Iv and dv are carefully de ned: operationalism. Participants are randomly assigned to conditions if between-groups. Participants are randomly assigned to the order in which they are exposed to conditions if with-in groups. Iv: a variable of interest that you manipulate. Subject variable: a variable of interest that cannot be manipulated: these variables re ect properties of your participants. Dv: the variable of interest that you measure. No random assignments and 1+ independent variables: if no independent variable than its a correlation study because we are just measuring since their is no manipulation. Tells us how people react in a environment when they know they are being studied.
