PSYCH 2E03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Medial Lemniscus, Dorsal Root Ganglion, Posterior Grey Column
Document Summary
Different receptor sensitives, different aspects of touch. Signals coming in enter dorsal root ganglia and signal sent up to cortex. Spinal cord: the only channel for transmission of somatosensory and motor info to and from the brain, receives and distributes 31 pairs (l + r) of spinal nerves that emerge out of the cord. Each is made up of 2 roots: dorsal and ventral. Sensory info travels towards spinal cord: cell bodies in drg. Motor info travels away from spinal cord (to muscles: cell bodies in ventral horn. Sensory info always traveling in and motor info always travelling out. Happening at each level of spinal cord. Dorsal and ventral refers to front and back, respectively. Rostral = front of brain, caudal is back of brain. Bell-magendie law: principle of separation of function of the dorsal and ventral roots. Idea that sensory info must travel through spinal cord was established early on by 2 scientists.
