Document Summary

Psych 2e03 - lecture 17 auditory perception. Hearing: the perceptual dimension of sound processing: the perceptual experience that comes from sound waves is hearing. Auditory system provides a meaningful representation of sound intensity and frequency. Special features: can locate sounds in the environment, can identify sounds among noise. Loudness refers to the magnitude of the perception created by a sound with a particular physical intensity. Intensity and loudness should not be used interchangeably: related to several factors. Frequency (within audible human range of 20hz 20 000 hz) Presence of other sound stimuli masking. Sound itself cannot have a value of loudness: loudness doesn"t equal intensity. Perceptual tests to identify audible threshold: minimum audible field (maf) threshold: done using open ear method, participant sitting in front of speaker, exactly 1m away at midline of body. Advantage: when speaker sitting in front of participant it represents a natural way of hearing.
