PSYCH 2E03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Voicelessness, Voice-Onset Time, Pragmatics
Document Summary
Psych 2e03 lecture 19 speech perception. Speech perception represents a large field of inquiry in the perceptual science. Can be broadly divided into 3 areas: speech production, speech comprehension and associated brain structures. Language can be any form of communication type (writing, reading, braille, morse code, different forms of sign language) Through the process of articulation is the most common way language is used. Speech is only sensory signal humans actively produce on their own. Speech is a voluntary active process where we are generating sensory signal. Speech produced by the vocal apparatus: subglottal system. Vocal folds (important in producing speech sounds) Glottis (opening between the vocal folds) changes as muscles open and close: vocal tract (has many different parts, all help us modify speech sounds) All spoken languages use outgoing air from the lungs to produce speech. As air proceeds through larynx, it must pass through an opening in the vocal folds called the glottis.
