Category members closest to the prototype are privileged (detected first, produced first) Basic level categories (ex: car, fruit) are psychologically privileged: these categories are usually captured by one word and seem to be the default. Working" level: we don"t usually talk about specific instances of these, ex:we usually describe the world in terms of basic level categories, ex: saying i drove my car today" not i drove my toyota corolla today". Category membership can be visualized as a vertical hierarchy: superordinate level, ex: vehicle, basic level category, ex: dog, subordinate level, ex: pug. Evidence that we use prototypes in everyday tasks: adequate to label common categories correctly. Which rules would not: graded membership. Prototypes differ across individuals / cultures: ex: in america, prototypical bird = robin, iin africa prototypical bird = exotic birdy. Some members are better instances than others. We respond faster to items similar to the prototype.
