Document Summary

Four needs for meaning; four patterns of motivation that guide how people try to make sense out of their lives. Purpose: connection of present to future events: goals: desired objective future states, getting a university degree, getting married and having children, fulfilments: desired subjective future states, living happily ever after, going to heaven. Sense of efficacy: control over events, actions a way in which we move toward meaning. There has been 3 or 4 research directions wrt the establishment of meaning and have all come to the same conclusion. Intimacy = establishing relationships with others around you: achievement = what have you done in your life, religion/spirituality, service. Wong: achievement, relationship, religion, self-transcendence = doing things for others; doing things outside yourself. Differs from person to person, and culture to culture; individualistic may focus on achievement, while collectivist societies may give more meaning to service; meeting the needs of those around them.
