Social referencing the process of reading emotional cues in others to help determine how to act in an uncertain situation (ex. child referencing to mother to determine whether it is safe to cross the visual cliff or not: age related differences, younger infants are more likely to act first and look later, older infants are more likely to check with the mother before they act, universal fears, separation anxiety: fear of being apart from a familiar caregiver (usually the mother or father), which typically peaks at about 15 years of age, although children from four diff cultures varied s to the intenseness with which they protested their mother"s departures, they all tended to reach the peak of distress at about the same age, between 13 and 15 months (subtle diff between onset, and offset, but all peak at around same age)
