Deciding to breastfeed can give babies the best possible start in life. Breastfeeding benefits the mother and their baby in many ways. In 2010, US Federal amendment was passed to encourage breastfeeding, requiring employers to provide a nursing mother reasonable break time to express breast milk after the birth of her child. Indiana laws state's that "Notwithstanding any other law, a woman may breastfeed her child anywhere the woman has a right to be". Why do so many women still choose not to breastfeed, even though it has health benefits for the baby and mother and the act is protected by federal and state law? How could we as a society encourage more women to breastfeed? Please provide references for your response. |
