Document Summary

Examines functions of educational institutions (i. e. selection, socialization) the smartest and hardest working students end up in elite professions. Contest mobility- in canada, where most students can attend high schools that can prepare them for university. Sponsored mobility- in some other countries young teens are given standardized tests typically before grade 9 that determine what kind of high school they can go to. Either a high school that can go to university, or not go to university. Another important aspect of school is socialization. As society becomes increasing secular, what happens to schools is that they are more and more taking on the function that religion once did. Schools teach equality and meritocracy, meaning that the best awards in life go to the most talented and hardworking among the students. They say that schools reward the best students regardless of their backgrounds (gender, race, ethnicity) They say that is everything that structural functionalism says is wrong.
