If you have a family member that is dying, you can receive government benefits for that family member. You could only receive benefits for one of these family members. Government imposes definitions of marriage that exclude people. In the past, interfaith and interracial marriages were prohibited. Common-law relationships were not recognized by government. Married couple have equal division of assets if they divorce, doesn"t apply to cohabiting couples.
