Definitions of families and marriage and implications. Definitions of family shape government social policy and inform the decisions we make about how to live our lives. If you have a family member that is dying, you can receive government benefits for that family member. You could only receive benefits for one of these family members. Your child or the child of your spouse or common-law partner. Excludes siblings, grandparents, extended family members like aunts or uncles, same sex couples, people who live in unconventional family arrangements (ie: someone who lives with friends) Policies that assume financial support (i. e. filial responsibility laws) Adult children expected to support elderly parent if parent is in financial need. Government imposes definitions of marriage that exclude people. In the past, interfaith and interracial marriages were prohibited. Common-law relationships were not recognized by government. Married couple have equal division of assets if they divorce, doesn"t apply to cohabiting couples.
