Sociology day eleven and twelve: key issues. Definitions of families and marriage and implications. Social policy: older generations such as our parents and grandparents had a different social landscape about their future, defining families. Definitions of family shape government social policy and inform the decisions we make about to live our lives. In the past, families were defined as mom, dad and kids but now in modern society that definition has changed. These government definitions have excluded the various types of families are modern society has and this has caused conflict for people. Example of a government policy: compassionate care program (2004) This program provides government benefits to the gravely ill family member. If you have a family member that is dying, you can receive government benefits to help aid your family member that is dying. This was the governments definition of family: Your child or the child of your spouse or common-law partner (of at least one year)
