Deviance: violaion of social norms (rules that guide behaviour) Response: informal versus formal social control o o. Response: in the case of breaking the law, formal social control responding to us (criminal jusice system) Informal social control: caring what people think about us so we don"t want to break the law. It is oten invisible unil a norm gets violated (ex: experience of standing in long line up, waiing for a long ime and someone cuts in front of you --> response: acivated when that person violates the norm. Sociologists will say: these deiniions are luid and are determined by power of people to label others as being a deviance/criminal o o o. More powerful groups are more successful at resising label of being deviant or criminal. Some groups don"t have as much power so it is easier for others to label them as deviance/criminal. What is considered a crime/deviance varies over ime.
