SOCIOL 1A06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Elder Abuse, Visible Minority, Symbolic Interactionism
Document Summary
Crime versus deviance: crime: when someone violates the law (a formal law that is enforced by social institutions such as the judicial system, deviance: when one violates a social norm. A social norm is an understanding of how we should behave in society. Not all of these rules are written but are viewed as being common sense or common to everyone with society (for example, saying thank you when someone gives you something) Formal social control: the police (criminal judicial system) will arrest someone and put them in jail for violating the law or social norm. Informal social control: those surrounding us such as family and friends are seen to constrain our behaviour since we heavily care about what think about us. For example, the experience of standing in a long line up and someone cutting into the line right in front of you.
