SOCIOL 1A06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Siq, International Inequality, Macrosociology
Document Summary
The stronger the bond to society (through social relationships e. g. marriage), the less likely a person is to commit suicide. Research shattered ideas about suicide only being reasoned by psychological reasons (individual) Compare: gender (men vs. women), marital status (single vs. married), religious affiliation variables differentiate between: protestants have higher rates of suicide the faith doesn"t promote social integrations (social solidarity) compares to other religions (e. g. judaism) Too high & too low solidarity would increase suicide rates: e. g. sacrifice their life to the group. Women would have lower rates of suicide because of their caregiving roles. Macro-sociology: society is an external thing that shapes us, with social structure in place it impacts people: e. g. Socio 1a06 is here because of the university. Micro-sociology: society isn"t external, every one of us makes society, and we constantly create society by communication. Through out individual level communications: e. g. this course never looks the same, it takes its shape from our interactions.
