SOCIOL 1C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Class Discrimination, Environmental Racism
Document Summary
Risk of spousal violence was also higher among common-law partners vs. married. These factors are related to lower income, newer relationships , and the greater stress and volatility of newer relationships involving young people. 1993-2002 "murder-suicides" occurred in 1/3 of spousal homicides against women, and only 3% against men. When men killed their female partners, they are more likely to commit suicide then women who kill their male partners. Domestic violence courts increased in convictions, expansion of victim services and treatment for offenders. Both indigenous men and women are overrepresented in the criminal justice system. Indigenous people are more likely to be victims. Problem of indigenous overrepresentation lies in the socio-economic disadvantaged that are experienced in indigenous communities. Allows indigenous offenders the opportunity for healing and rehab through involvement with indigenous communities & culture. Sentencing circles may not appropriately deal with family/domestic violence.
