Document Summary
Textbook definition (brym, new society p. 4): sociology is the systematic study of human behaviour in social context. My definition: connecting our ideas, feelings, behaviours, experiences, and relationships to our wider society (both local and global contexts, past and present). It is a way of understanding and contextualizing one"s personal experiences. Sociologists use divergent theories and qualitative and quantitative methods to try to understand society. A social problem is a social condition (such as poverty) or a pattern of behaviour (such as violence against women) that people believe warrants public concern and collective action to bring about change. Challenges faced by canadians who provide care to children and other family members including aging parents, and ill, injured, disabled, and dying family members. Challenges faced by canadian workers including temporary migrant (foreign) workers such as precarious employment and discrimination.
