Primary deviance: because primary deviance is not defined as real" deviance. Individual does not regard self as deviant: however, more serious negative social reactions may occur if: Individuals continue in deviant ways or if they are powerless or both. If negative social reactions occur or increase: maintaining non-deviant self-id increasingly difficult, family & friends withdraw emotional & social support, agents of social control may increase surveillance and condemnation, secondary deviance may emerge. Is the 2nd stage in deviant self-id formation: occurs when people: Ignored role of economic & political forces: social inequalities gender, ethnicity, class. Ignores causes of primary deviance: why people deviate necessity, pleasure, gain, stigmatization does not always produce deviant behaviour, for some, being negatively labeled ends their nonconformity, esp if deviance receives attention from others. Institutionalization - prison: stigmatized with a deviant id as a criminal, problems faced by stigmatized individuals, resulting in altered id that leads to a reconstituted self, difficulties of reintegrating ex-offenders into community.
