The self: recall our discussion last week about stigma, stigma surrounding mental illness did not exist and does still exist in society today. Total institution : environments that try to completely control and regulate an individual, changes to self-identity and presentation, rebellion. Intransigence rebellion: withdrawal pulling away; reclusiveness, colonization making the institution a desirable home. Interested in how individuals with a strong and positive collective identity may buffer the ill effects of stigma and discrimination on individuals from stigmatized population . Clubhouse members are valued as people with the same needs, capabilities and aspirations as all people. By voluntary contributing their talents as participants in the operation of the clubhouse, they are needs, wanted and expected.
