Lecture 11: the social psychology of mental health. Week after reading week we will have a viewing on return to oz during normal class hours for assignment #2. Anything from this lecture on going until the final class in late march early. April will be testable material for the whole term (all course content this term). Removing the criminal or deviant background that was once associated with them as being deviant and understanding that it is in now not bad, rather a sickness. How can we/do we define mental illness: acknowledge the changing meanings, definitions and constructions of mental health and illness over time. Historically, cultural, and socially: foucault (1965) was one of the first scholars to study historical constructions of mental illness. Mental illness is generally a more loaded term, negative notation associated with it (ill), mental health is generally used to encompass a spectrum.
