Week 1 - introduction to the sociology of sport. Culture consists of the ways of life people create as they participate in a group or society. Culture includes collective ways of living, thinking, feeling and acting in and towards the world. There are no fixed or static cultural formations. Culture is created or socially constructed by human beings in interactions with each other. It is not something inherent to particular groups of people. Different groups of people have different abilities to create and shape culture. Some people have more power and more resources in this process. Society refers to a collection of people living in a defined geographical territory and united by a political system and a shared sense of self-identification that distinguishes them from other collections of people. Though there are many examples of societies within/across nation-states. Recognizing the specifics of a society is critical for researching and understanding its cultural practices.
