Socially constructed classification system developed to give meaning to particular physical traits. Ethnicity: a particular cultural heritage that is used to identify a category of people regarded as socially distinct because they share a way of life, a collective history, and a sense of themselves as people . Racial ideology: a web of ideas and beliefs that people use to give meaning to specific physical traits such as skin colour to evaluate people in terms of how they are classified by race . Race has has a powerful impact on history and society, but it has little to do with real biological diversity among human beings. This is because it is based on categories and classifications that people have developed for social and political reasons . Race developed by europeans in the 17th century during colonization.
