SOCIOL 2T03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Hegemonic Masculinity, Gender Binary, Sexualization
Document Summary
Gender = socially constructed expectations for how people of a particular sex should act. Hegemonic masculinity/femininity = dominant social ideas about what it means to be a man/woman and how a man/woman should act. Gender ideological = a form of cultural logic about what it means to be a man or a woman in society. Most societies adhere to a gender binary model. A person is considered to be either male or female based on biological characteristics. Characteristics that are considered masculine or feminine are assumed to be natural and tied to biological sex. Gender ideology and binaries create powerful expectations for how men/women should act or behave. Gender binary model marginalizes people outside the boundaries of the supposedly natural way of being. Violating gender norms has social consequences of varying degrees of severity. Popular culture helps to police" acceptable gender behaviour. In most societies around the world, men have historically enjoyed greater privilege, resources, and influence.
