People with power in sport often support a functionalist view of sport, emphasize the status quo, and have a vested interest in the continued operation and growth of sport. Historical research shows that sport has been used by powerful people as a form of social control. Ex. canadian residential schools assimilation indigenous children through mainstream sports (20th century) The mainstream sports media reproduces problematic and narrow ideologies. Alternative or activist sport media has the possibility to offer counter narratives to the sport media complex. Forde and wilson examine the practices and goals of sport media activities (smas: influencing content and practices of mainstream media, building independent, democratic and participatory media, smas had different definitions of success" depending on their goals and resources. Smas do not have the same resources or influence as mainstream/corporate media. Yet, digital media enables them to exert limited influence on the content and practices of sport media.
