Government uses definitions of family in creating social policy: concepts have changed a lot in the past 50 years with, historically, many definitions excluded many people homosexual and mixed families, etc. Your child or the child of your spouse or common-law partner. These are the people who will receive your benefits: if the person you wish to care for is gravely ill, is family to you, you can talk to the government to give them your benefits. Sometimes government criteria is embedded with assumptions about families: how they operate, obligations towards family members, e. g. Based on parental income, assumption that parents will support their children through university. Shape our personal decisions: symbolically important for gays and lesbians. Families are socially constructed and have varied over time and place: this is not a recent thing families have always been evolving and this is in conjunction with economic changes.
