3 dimensions account for gendered society: distinction between male and female, endorse division of labour. Men public domain, women private domain: male public domain activities valued as superior. Women of colour, immigrant and refugee women, and aboriginal women have experienced denial and exclusion because of gender stereotypes, double standards, glass ceilings, and sticky floors. (p. 140, 5 th edition) Based on androcentric assumptions, and patricentric bias: social, political, economic and cultural controlled by men, masculinity more highly valued, males have preferential access to power/privilege. Women have been put down , put in their place , and put out of sight . Reality is that denial and exclusion is a fact of life for many which impacts integration. Eurocentrism effects are still felt: lack of appropriate skills, training and support, overseas credentials, foreign experience, professional status. Patriarchy: institutionally enforced privileging of males over females and children across all domains of society, from politics to culture to family.
