SOCPSY 1Z03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Social Learning Theory, Reinforcement, Observational Learning
Document Summary
Limited social interaction w/ parents and no contact w/ others. Confined to room and specific situations (e. g. feeding) Absence of spoken language; taught not to talk. Absence of attachment and bonding w/ her parents. Experiment: orphanage children under 18 months of age; nurses would take care of their basic physiological needs but very little contact w/ them. By the age of 4. 5 many kids had difficulty recognizing different emotions/facial expressions. Key processes identified by social learning theory absent. Shaping: gradually increase correspondence btwn the learner"s behaviour and the desire response. Children taking on the role/personality their parents have. Genie"s isolation meant that she had very little opportunity to observe even basic behaviours, or more complex behavioural patterns (e. g. dress) As the behaviours come closer to the full thing, the participants get positive reinforcement. W/out language, children are unable to successfully undergo more complex socialization and learn about the values, norms, and standards of a particular culture.
