SOCSCI 2UA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Stimulus Control, Reinforcement, Doorbell
Document Summary
Extinction: not providing reinforcement for a previously reinforced behaviour. Whining child mom and dad don"t give in put behaviour on extinction (that behaviour will not earn a chocolate bar) *never use extinction on own always use with positive approach. Whining child not getting what they want now getting louder, hitting, etc. Burst (give everything they got) then behaviours drop. Positive: addition of a stimulus that decreases the likelihood of a behaviour to continue to occur in the future. Ethical debate - typically dealing with impaired population. Negative: removal of a stimulus that decreases the likelihood of a behaviour to continue to occur in the future. Antecedent events that alter behaviour by changing the value of a reinforcing and/or discriminative stimulus. Thirsty walk by starbucks value of coffee increased. Walking in desert value of water increase. Stimulus control: an antecedent stimulus is shown to gain control over one or more particular behaviours.
