SOCWORK 1A06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Palliative Care, Legal Abuse, Long-Term Care
Document Summary
Semester 2, lecture 3, social work - jan 25, 2016. Seniors are the fastest growing age cohort in canada. Have an impact on health care and social care provision. Baby boom generation is now approaching retirement age. Longer life expectancy as a result of healthier lifestyles and universal healthcare. Discrimination and oppression against individuals and groups based on their age. Tendency to focus on economic crises (pension, healthcare burden, etc. ) Aging is often seen as a state of decline. However: older adults make major contributions to society in the form of support and care to spouses, children, grandchildren, friends, neighbours, volunteerism (fast et al. , 2006) Older people are taking jobs away from younger people. People may assume that old people work "easy" jobs because that"s all they can do. Social constructions are categories that we create in which some categories are more privileged than others (ie: youthfulness/middle age versus older adults)
