PSYC 2245 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Normative Social Influence, Good Music, Kin Selection
Document Summary
Pro-social behaviour: any act preformed with the goal of benefitting another person. Altruism: the desire to help others even if it involves a cost to the helper. Reciprocity norm: expectation that helping others will increase the likeliness that they will help us in the future: idea that people alone couldn"t survive without the help of someone else. The practice of giving someone something in agreement that when you need something, they will provide you with help. Social exchange: the cost and rewards of helping. Altruism can be based on self interest. Social exchange theory argues that much of what we do stems from the desire to maximize our rewards and minimize our costs. People are distressed and aroused when they see someone else suffering so helping may be to relieve that discomfort. Empathy: ability to experience events and emotions the way another person experiences them.
