Document Summary
Origin of sociology: there were three changes during the 1800"s and 1900"s about how people thought about society and their place within it: new industrial economy. Inventors were using new sources of energy to operate machinery, which led to a huge industrial revolution. As cities grew larger, social problems arose (pollution, crime, homelessness): political change, this economic and city growth brought new ideas from john locke, Adam smith, thomas hobbes which promoted free enterprise (self- interest) and freedom, thus turning away from hierarchy. Founded sociology (systematic study to human society) in 1838. Follows the approach of positivism (a scientific approach to knowledge based facts as opposed to mere speculation) believed society operated on laws (physical world on gravity and law of nature) Thought through science, people can understand about the world and society. Global perspective: study of the larger world and society"s place within it.
