In matrix there is a central canal that contains blood vessels, veins and capillaries and osteocytes. Covers all bone surfaces except for the articular surfaces. Can tolerate a lot of stress applied to either end of the long bone. Cannot tolerate moderate stress applied to the side of the shaft. Also can be found at the ends of the bone. Cannot take a lot of stress , but can take stress from different directions.
