ANAT 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Inferior Vena Cava, Interatrial Septum, Left Atrioventricular Orifice
Document Summary
All cardiovascular functions depend on heart; muscular organ beats approx. 100000 times/day pumping roughly 8000l of blood (double muscular pump w/ 4 chambers) The heart lies in the middle of the chest cavity b/w the lungs in a space called the mediastinum. Apex of heart points to left anterior side, making the base of the heart posterior. 2 systems: 1) pulmonary (carries bld. to and from gas exchange in lungs) 2) systemic (transport bld. to and from the rest of the body) Away from heart; hold oxygenated blood red. Toward the heart; hold deoxygenated blood blue. Heart is surrounded by pericardial cavity; lining of cavity = pericardium (divided into visceral & parietal) Fibrous pericardium = attached to diaphragm, holding the heart in place. B/w visceral & parietal; thin sac of fluid lubricating heart muscle. Outer wall; lines inner surface of pericardial sac (surrounds heart) Space b/w visceral & parietal pericardia = pericardial cavity containing pericardial fluid.
