Document Summary

Tissues are collections of specialized cells and cell products that perform a specific function. Organs are formed by two or more tissues that are united in patterns to perform a series of specific functions. Systems are formed by an interacting group of organs that performs one or more specific functions essential for the well being of the organism. Basic tissues: 30-100 trillion cells, only 4 types of tissue. Epithelium is a tissue composed of closely apposed cells with very little or no intervening intercellular substance. Functions: physical protection permeability sensation nervous eqithelium contractility/secretion glandular epithelium. Called simple columnar because cells appear like little columns from the top (crosssection) looks like hexagons next to each other. Height is much more that with, nucleus is oval or elongated and crowded ta the bottom os the cell. This type of epithelium provides a bit of protection but found again where absorption and secretion occur.
