ANAT 216 week 3 lecture 1
Urinary sys
functions
Blood filter: 7L per day to remove toxins, metabolic waste, excess ions)
Endocrine: prod renin (reg BP and V) and erythropoietin (prod RBC)
Kidneys
Location: upper lumbar region of ab cavity T12-L3, some protection by
ribs, b/n posterior ab wall ad parietal peritoneum, retroperitoneal
R is lower than L because its covered by liver
Surfaces: adrenal glands superiorly
Hilus: concave medial, where renal artery enters + vein exits into renal
sinus
3 supportive tissues
1. Fibrous renal capsule: stuck to surface of kidney
2. Adipose capsule: fatty mass, anchors kidney to post ab wall and
cushions/protects kidneys
3. Renal fascia: outer layer, dense irregular CT for support+
protection
Cortex: outermost layer
Medulla: parallel bundles of microscopic tubules, contains renal
pyramids, apex= renal papilla, renal columns (extensions of cortex) sep
the pyramids
Renal pelvis: contained in sinus, branches into major calyx minor
calyx one for each pyramid so it can collect urine from each
(nephron renal papilla minor major calyx renal pelvis
ureter)
