NSCI 323 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Rhinal Cortex, Temporal Lobe, Henry Molaison
Document Summary
Procedural memory -> unconscious memory ex. routine stuff that you don"t have to think about = walking, breathing etc. Get info right now, store some things and forget other things. Transitions between short-term memory and long-term memory. Short term memory is the maintenance of the information. Some believe that it"s about manipulating information. Not much difference in circuitry with working and short- term. Cascade of sensory info that leads to short-term and eventually goes to long-term. Short-term memory is located sensory cortices -> don"t need persistent activity. Solution in the 20th century was to remove the seizing part of the brain = removed his temporal lobe of the brain = removed his temporal lobe recovered fine but had severe memory impairments. Anterograde amnesia -> couldn"t form new memories. Intact procedural memory -> could form new motor skills. Retrograde amnesia of most post-surgery events -> could remember pre-surgery events. Damaged his medial-temporal lobe system (rhinal cortex and hippocampus)
