This shows femme savant (educated woman)- an educated, cultured and accomplished woman who was elegant, beautiful and sophisticated. There is a feather pen alongside a letter as well as a bookshelf in behind and a book in her hand. Voltaire is given saggy folded skin, sunken toothless mouth, deep facial wrinkles and slumping shoulders which all add to his age and frailty. Looks like a philosopher- his head is turned as if in deep thought and his mouth looks like it has a smirk on it as if he is pondering or laughing at a funny thought/discovery. Fete galante: an outdoor or rural festival, typified in 18th century painting, considered a genre of painting. Femme savant: french for learned woman, used to describe the cultured hostesses of rococo salons, also called salonnieres. Chinoiserie: the imitation of chinese motifs and techniques, popular in the 18 th century.
