Religious buildings as an environment for art (13th-14h. Sienna cathedral: interior, begin first half of 13th century, completed early 1270s (1st picture) Nave is the centre hallway of the church. The arches separating the centre are called an arcade: exterior, fa ade, lower half by sculptor, giovanni pisano (son of nicola pisano), The exterior is made out of zebra marble. Exterior of cathedral finished later, only worrying about the bottom half. Figure standing with scroll (old testament prophet) Figures from fa ade moved to museum to prevent pollution damage: cathedral translates to bishop"s throne , fa ade made after cathdral is built. Mary, sister of moses by giovanni pisano: from fa ade of siena cathedral. 1284-1299: now in museo ell"opera del duomo, sien, there were other statues gesturing by her, and she is using her head to listen. 1289-1301: white carrara marble, variegated red marble, 12 feet 9 inches high, commissioned by canon arnoldus.
