Aquaculture seen as solution to deficit in fish populations: some see this method as another problem. Protection to wild populations (preserve genetic diversity) Aquaculture definition: domestication of wild stock for human consumption. Deliberate control in husbandry -> maintain genetic diversity in house. Aquaculture includes other species besides fish: aquatic plants, molluscs, crustaceans. British columbia = greatest production of atlantic salmon: a lot of canadian fish population is in the coast lines. Canada = less percentage in aquaculture industry in the world. 1970s= fish began on commercial basis, it is recent: 1980s= fast expansion of fishing industry. Cages in fresh or salt water are one of the very first methods used in aquaculture.
