CLST 101 Lecture : November 1, 2012- Trials.docx
Document Summary
Trials lasted only one day in athens. The accused represented themselves (no lawyers to talk on their behalf) The rich could hire people to write their speeches. A water clock was used to tell time during trials. If a person was a victim of a crime they could choose to press charges or not stopped the hole in the clock was covered. It was possible to call witnesses: normally close friends and intimate family members were called but when it came time for needing evidence in court anyone who was present at the time was called on. Women and slaves could not be witnesses. Athenian bronze-ballots: the hollow ballet was for guilty, the full ballot was for innocent, to keep the ballot secret they covered the hole so no one could see whether they were hollow or full. When the trial was over the jurors received lead token to be paid for their work.
