Acropolis = height of the city: all cities normally had one! (does not mean the building) In athens, acropolis home to bronze age palace. Under tyrants (peisistratos and his sons), used it as their headquarters. Very keen to promote athens so various buildings, including temples, built. Athens now leading city of greece exports widely (black figure pottery, then red figure) Things were going very well for athens until the persian wars (490-479). Persia took over athens in 480 and athens fell. Once athens got control back, they had to rebuild since everything was destroyed. Buildings all date to 5th century; earlier buildings haven"t survived. 4 main buildings still standing that were built in the 5th century.
