Week 8 notes mar 5th and mar 7th. Class mar 5th caesar and mid first century events. At luca in 56, triumvirate extended and all three divided up their duties. Triumvirate ends in 53 when crassus was killed. Meanwhile, general mayhem in rome everyone was fighting. Pompey seen as only person capable of restoring order, so elected sole consul for 52. Still loved by the city mob, but hated by optimates, etc. People afraid of his imminent return remember what happened with sulla. Hoped fo(cid:396) (cid:272)o(cid:374)sulship fo(cid:396) ja(cid:374) (cid:1008)8 to stop the(cid:373). His replacement in gaul to come out at end of 49, will then rush to rome and become consul for 48 and will become immune again. To run for office, he had to be in rome. This was a problem as he wanted to avoid rome. Thought his supports could get enough support for him to run at last minute and get in.
