In the 1960s: emergence of the civil rights mov"t, feminism, sexual orientaion, & immigraion (what is the ideal american/canadian?) These lead to criical engagement: recepion studies. Came about wit the understanding that audiences are not all the same. We get diferent feelings out of diferent medias. The meaning does not rely in the text, but in the audience, & each person will do diferent things with it: idenity poliics. We are all designed or inluenced, & are afected by who we are (sexual orientaion, personality, etc. : muliculturalism. The idea of acceptance & learning to live together even if we are diferent. Screening: the piano, jane campion, 1993: the woman does not speak, the beginning of the ilm, she says today, my father married me to a man i have not yet met . A woman is considered to be in the possession of her father unil she is given to her husband.
