Document Summary
Recall: global energy system: countertradition and the greenhouse effect keeps average earth surface temperature above 0, amount depends on amount of water vapor and co2 in the atmosphere. Fate of radiation emitted by planet (long wave) can go in different places: outer space, absorbed by various particles in atmosphere, after can be reradiated (greenhouse effect!!) to space or back down to surface to planet. Serves to increase temperature of the planet: trapping heat in the atmosphere, greenhouse effect is a natural process, makes the earth habitable for humans. Industrial revolution (1800s): machines, coal introduced as primary energy source for heat, initiation of factories in europe: 1900s: moved from coal to oil and natural gas, still need to burn these energy sources. Fossil fuels come from the ground and need to be drilled. Located in hawaii: measures atmospheric co2 concentrations, very regular seasonal "zig zags"
