Module 5: estimation & hypothesis testing: 5. 1 estimation. Population distribution: a histogram of all the measurements in the entire population. Will remain the same all the time including the mean. Sample: a histogram of the data you"ve collected from the population. Will change is population is resampled, the mean will change as well. Estimation: is a process of inferring a population parameter using the data that"s in your sample. Sample estimate: estimate of the population parameter based on your sample. Population parameter is any attribute of the population distribution. The population parameter is xed, for data in our sample we estimate the population parameter. True value of a characteristic of the population distribution: 5. 2 sampling distributions. Sampling distribution: distribution of the means of your samples. The probability distribution of the estimate from repeatedly sampling the population a large number of times. Standard error: the variation in a sampling distribution.
