Week 2 lecture part 2: the french revolution. France was going broke and needed to increase revenue. The nobility didn"t pay a lot of taxes and resisted a lot of these developments. The parlements managed to convince people in the countryside against modernizing economy and mobilized people in resistance reforms. Monarchy kept postponing reform and the economic crisis became more serious, french aid contributed to the war in the american colonies against the british (strategic success because. Britain was a competitor but put them more in debt and economic pressure). Ministers of finance in france tried to deal with the crisis but each that attempted only made it worse. One posted state"s bookkeeping, which informed france"s rivals with its weak economy. Proposed resolution: win over the nobility through the assembly of notables. This assembly demanded a share of power instead of helping the state. They demanded to go back to a power-sharing government rather than political absolutism.
