Babylon was the centre of jewish learning. Persian empires comes along and gives permission for jews to return to jerusalem and they rebuild the temple. Revolt in 167 bc led by the maccabees. With the temple destroyed it can"t be a temple based religion anymore. Judaism emphasizes learning as a form of worship. 1750: hessidic judaism, a response to an over emphasis on learning and under emphasis on spirituality. Easier for jews to live amongst muslims than amongst christians, especially after the crusades. Jews rejected the idea of jesus as messiah. Crusades: with the crusades come unleashing of violence. Middle ages: jews expelled from various countries, france. Sophardic: latino- these are the ones expelled form spain. Jews forced to move eastward, but also pulled. More jews lived in poland at the time of ww2 than anywhere else in the world 3. 2 million. By the end of the war 3 million had perished.
