TOPIC 1. INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH AND DISEASE
1/ DEFINITIONS
i. Health
- Negative : focused on “what is missing”
- The absence of disease and illness
- Medical
- ie. No disease = healthy
- Positive: Described by world health organization as
complete well being (social, mental, physical).
-developed after WWII
-some problems: can be too open; much to be defined
-optimistic: ensure good health for all
-although, not widely accepted.
ii. Illness: subjective (ie. “I am sick”)
- Individual interpretation
iii. Disease: objective
- Verifiable using diagnostic criteria (“Cannons and
Truth”)
- ICD (European form of CDC) defines it
- Professional consensus on diagnosis
2/ FIRST PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH RESEARCH AND
PRACTICE
1) Health status can change over time
-Populations can be used to monitor changes
(predetermined illness or not)
-Individuals are not reliable
2) We can learn the causes of changes in health
-Systematic observations using measurement
(application of observations)
