HLTH 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Waking Hours, International Studies, Systematic Review
Document Summary
Sedentary time and its association with risk for disease incidence, mortality and hospitalization in adults: Background: the magnitude, consistency, and manner of association between sedentary time and outcomes independent of physical activity remain unclear. Purpose: to quantify the association between sedentary time and hospitalizations, all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer in adults independent of physical activity. Study selection: studies assessing sedentary behaviour in adults, adjusted for physical activity and correlated to at least 1 outcome. Greater sedentary time= increased risk for all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, cancer mortality, cardiovascular disease incidence, cancer incidence and type 2 diabetes incidence (largest association) Sitting for too long can kill you, even if you exercise. Standing burns twice as many calories, as well as strengthen bones and muscles through weight bearing gravity. Walk around every hour during waking hours. Sedentary behaviour= separate and distinct risk factor for major chronic diseases. Total spectrum of movement within 24-hour period is critical.
