KNPE 237 Lecture 6: KNPE 237 – W4L1
Document Summary
2 types of movements: spontaneous, rhythmic movements (stereotypies, reflexes, stimulus + response. Rhythmical (event though these movements seem random, there"s actually a rhythm in them) Baby moves ankle, knee, and hop joint in unison rather than sequential. Co-contraction (baby activates muscles for flexing and extending limbs: end of 1 simultaneously) st year: Leads to voluntary reaching and grasping: searching/ rooting reflex. Responds by turning head toward the touch. Needed to ingest milk: moro reflex. Likely a protective instinct to flare up when we are falling, think what adults do when they slip on ice: startle reflex. No real purpose for it: asymmetric tonic neck reflex. Stimulated by turning head to one side (likley for breathing and survival) Responds by extending same-side arm and leg: babinski reflex. May indicate neurological issues if it comes back after it has gone away at around 4 months: postural reflexes, reactive movement that helps infant maintain posture in a changing environment.
