KNPE 261 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Stretch Reflex, Error Detection And Correction, Working Hypothesis
Document Summary
Motor plan: planned sequences of limb and body mvt to generate voluntary action. Motor command: activity in limb motor circuits (cortical or subcortical) used to excite. Traditional view: reflexes are simple, stereotyped and have limited processing abilities. Long-latency reflexes possess most if not all abilities of voluntary control muscles or evoke voluntary mvt. Error signals: used to adjust ongoing mvt (error based on diff b/w expected and actual body states) Closed-loop system: control using feedback and error detection to maintain desired state. Comparator: error detection mechanism is based on diff b/w planned and actual motion. Rapid, discrete tasks not explained by closed loop b/c action is fully planned mvt and if mvt. Reflexes: is wrong, stopping is hard and slow. Feedback does not influence fine moment-moment control (unless feedback is reflex) Stereotypes, involuntary, automatic and typically rapid response to feedback. M3: voluntary rxn time r, with latency of 120-180ms: voluntary response to mechanical stretch.
